PAHs: an invisible danger for firefighters
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of over 100 chemical compounds formed from the incomplete combustion of organic matter like wood, fossil fuels, plastic or coal. Sixteen of them are particularly concerning due to their toxicity and health effects, with several classified as carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
Because of the nature of their work, firefighters are particularly exposed to these substances found in smoke, soot and residues that penetrate their PPE. While this exposure was long underestimated, awareness is now growing within the profession. More and more firefighters and public safety managers are recognizing the risks these compounds pose, not only during interventions but also afterward when contaminated gear is handled and stored.
